About the books

Want to quickly get an overview of public health or a particular topic within it?  This is my personal choice of books on public health theory and practice - what's yours?  Please let me know.

Most books here are good to dip in and out of - don't feel compelled to read each in its entirety, and remember many textbooks date quite quickly, so you may want to complement your reading with a bit of internet surfing for updated information.

General public health

Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice (2e)
Pencheon D, Guest C, Melzer D and Gray JAM
ISBN: 0198566557

Very useful short, pragmatic chapters on a wide variety of public health topics.  I've got the first edition, but assume this second edition is as good if not better

Donaldson's Essential Public Health (3e)
Donaldson LJ & Scally G.
ISBN 1846192099

This is the new edition of this classic textbook, which has very readable, in-depth chapters about lots of useful topics including fertility rates, mental health, care of the elderly and environmental health

Lecture Notes on Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine (5e)
Farmer, R and Lawrenson R.
ISBN: 1405106743

Okay, so maybe quite a lot of it is basic, but the chapter on health targets gives very concise summaries of the epidemiology of major diseases over time

Oxford Textbook of Public Health (4e)
Detels R et al.
ISBN: 0198509596

For my money slightly erratic, but still useful for reference. The chapters are very detailed, perhaps a bit too detailed - I found it often took too long to distil outrelevant material - but the contributors are usually leaders in their field.  I didn't use this as much as I thought I might, but it does look good on your shelf!  Note a new edition is now available, too

Mastering Public Health
Lewis G, Sheringham J, Kalim K and Crayford T
ISBN 9781853157813

Is this the answer to your Part A prayers?  Possibly... read my review here.

Statistics and epidemiology

Essential Medical Statistics (2e)
Kirkwood BR and Sterne JAC
ISBN: 0865428719

Very approachable, although later chapters are probably too in-depth for the MFPH

Sociology

Sociology as Applied to Medicine (6e).
Scambler G.
ISBN: 0702029017

Not all relevant to everyday practice or the MFPH exams, but useful introduction to concepts such as the sick role and deviance

Organisations and management

Understanding Organizations (4e).
Handy, C.
ISBN: 0140156038

Perhaps not as good as some evangelists make out, but a useful reference for looking up specific terms, and surprisingly cheap by 'textbook' standards. I found the chapters on power particularly helpful

Health protection

Communicable Disease Control Handbook (2e).
Hawker J, Begg N, Blair I, Reintjes R and Weinberg J
ISBN: 1405124245

Excellent summaries of all the diseases you could ever want (so to speak!) - good for public health on-calls

Health policy

Nudge: Improving decisions about health, wealth and happiness.
Thaler R and Sunstein C
ISBN: 0141040017

A simple concept eloquently (if slightly lengthily) explained - basically, make the default option the healthy one.

Climate change

The End of Oil: The Decline of the Petroleum Economy and the Rise of a New Energy Order
Roberts, P.
ISBN: 0747570817

Very interesting and balanced book about how much oil is left in the world, when it may run out, and how a new energy economy (such as a hydrogen economy) may work.
